Food Safe Applications

Hi all, I have an arduino project related to food/homebrewing. Usually when people sanitize jars/bottles/bubblers for homebrewing, they boil them—if my arduino were in a water-tight container, could that container be boiled without damaging the board? Or would I need to give it an alcohol bath/sanitize some other way?

The Arduino is not intended to come into contact with liquids or food, except pure distilled water or pure isopropyl alcohol, which on rare occasions and if necessary, can be used to clean circuit boards.

If it was in a watertight container and briefly (i.e. a few seconds) dunked in the boiling water then it might be ok.

Putting aside the water ingress issues, the components on your Arduino are probably commercial spec with a max temperature of around 70 degC.

What are you trying to do with your project. Are you measuring temperature? Just put the probe in the water and leave the delicate electronics well away.

Perhaps expand on what you are trying to do and you should get the help you need.

The arduino is potted at the bottom of a watertight container. This container is submerged in fluid (think wine must) and measures the specific gravity of the fluid. The fluid that the capsule sits in does not reach temps over 80c. However, the capsule has to be sanitized before it can be submerged in the fluid, and most home brewers boil their equipment in order to sanitize it. Is that sufficient context?

IS there any air inside your container? IF so, how do you handle the increased air pressure when immersed in boiling water? How does the water tight operate under the increased internal air pressure?

If arduino is protected from liquid and you have soldered wiring, I don't see any problem to briefly heat it up to 100 C'.
Edit: Arduino nano/mini, not some new generation board withs sensors etc...

Boiling isn’t recommended, as high heat could damage the Arduino even in a sealed container. Instead, sanitize with a 70% alcohol solution to protect the electronics while ensuring food safety.
