HELP I cannot find my board in IDE

Just got the Arduino Starter Kit and I'm having issues finding my board/port in Arduino IDE. I'm using a genuine Uno R3 on an iMac, my OS is Sequioa 15.2, and I have IDE 2.3.4 installed. I've followed the instructions in the starter book, but IDE doesn't recognize my Uno board. When I try and select the port in the tools menu I see 3 ports (/dev/cu.URT1, /dev/cu.BLTH, and /dev/cu.Bluetooth-Incoming-Port). I've tried resetting my computer, replugging in my board multiple times, I've used a different USB cord and still same issue, and I've verified my iMac can read a USB thumbdrive just fine. Please help! I really want to start doing some of the projects, but I feel so stupid not even being able to figure out how to upload the basic blink sketch!

Hi @petite_mupp. Please try this troubleshooting procedure and then report your results in a reply on this forum thread:

:exclamation: This procedure is not intended to solve the problem. The purpose is to gather more information.

  1. Unplug the USB cable of your Arduino board from your computer if it is currently connected.
  2. Click the Apple logo on the left side of the menu bar at the top of the screen ("Apple menu").
  3. Select "System Settings..." from the menu.
  4. A "System Settings" window will open. Click "General" in the menu on the left side of the window.
You may need to scroll the menu down to see "General".
  5. Click "About" on the panel at the right side of the "System Settings" window.
  6. The "About" panel will open. Click the "System Report..." button at the bottom of the panel.
  7. The "System Information" window will now open. Select Hardware > USB from the tree on the left side of the window.
  8. Take note of the contents of the "USB Device Tree" panel of the "System Information" window.
  9. Connect the Arduino board to your computer with a USB cable.
  10. Select File > Refresh Information from the menu bar.

Do you see any new device appear in the "USB Device Tree" panel of the "System Information" window after doing the last step?

Under the "USB Device Tree" panel I have a "USB 3.1 Bus" and a "USB 3.1 Bus - Facetime HD Camera (Built-in)" listed. I plugged the Arduino board into the computer's usb and hit "Refresh Information", no new Devices pop up in the device tree.

OK, this tells us that the device is not being recognized at the operating system level (or below), rather than it being something specific to the Arduino IDE application.

Does the LED that is marked "ON" on the UNO R3 board turn on when you connect it to your computer with a USB cable?

Did you install the driver?

Yes, the "ON" LED illuminates and stays lit when I plug the board into the computer.

No, because the instructions in the starter book specifically state that with Mac OS X 10.8 and later, "You do not need to install any drivers to work with the board."

And I don't even know where or how to find/install the proper driver.

Is it a genuine UNO or a clone.

Genuine Uno, bought with the Ardunio Starter Kit.

Have you tried shutting down the IDE including any open Serial Monitors? Check the dock and make sure you quit any Arduino icons you see. If that does not work, try re-booting the Mac.
I have had this happen, no idea why, but I just keep trying and eventually it comes back. If you have another board of any kind, try that.
