I fixed it now. Turns out it was a loose wire on my end. Thanks!
I assume you are using DuPont jumper wires to connect the components of the system
they are an endless source of poor connections and intermittent problems
OK for prototype systems but long term projects should use screw or soldered connections
there are industrial versions of microcontrollers with screw terminals, improved power supplies, etc
