Laser with step sensor

Hello

I wondering if someone could give me a tip.

I would like to design a sensor which I could use as a Laser Synth. But I only would like to have one laser, which I could use as a scale.

I thought about getting an ultrasonic sensor and something which produces a laser beam in the ultrasonic sensors radius.

I am not sure about what to buy. Is there a small laser which could use the Arduinos 5V's supply, anyone used it before?

How about using a laser pointer?

And I've seen this sort of thing done with the Sharp IR distance sensor -- in fact, there was one at DorkSnow (Dorkbot London weekend event in Limehouse), using just the Sharp IR sensor and no laser.

Hi,

I think the Sharp IRs are too expensive. I think I will go for a PING ultrasonic sensor, I know this is working with the Arduino. The thing is I will have to but a small lazer pointer which also could use the Arduinos power..
