You can try solid core wires, make sure Arduino +5v goes the display Vdd.

You would need a voltmeter to measure the voltage

Assume you don’t have a 2nd display ?

And it is better to not power LCD via +5V. It is better to do it using a power splitter as below image:

I admit I always used I2C displays (so I have never had to do with the contrast pot) IMO there's no reason to do that. A pot with both wires to GND won't change anything to the V0 pin, so what's the deal doing it?
