lots of LEDs use a shift register, probably use a port expander to use I2c to save pins.
on-board serial for 2 or 4 line backlit LCD
one note about LEDs if you do use multi color, make sure you use resistors that make them all the same brightness.
my nano has a glaring red led that is so bright that I cannot see the green led next to it.
