Measuring distance using

For science!
I would like to measure distance of a string the gets wound around a small spool. I would like to do this and log the distance of the string every minute or so. The string is immersed in water so I wanna avoid lidar and ultrasonic distance measurement devices. I would be cool with a thing that measured distance as it wound on the spool.
Help me out with ideas.

Google "Draw-wire sensor".
Leo..

Pass the string around a pulley, and count rotations of the pulley.

Can't visualize exactly your goal but would counting the spool revolutions help?

You'd likely have to account for the change in diameter as the string spools up.
The calculus is pretty straightforward for a single stack, like a paper roll, but a bit more difficult for a spool as you have to account for width as well.

Not with a pulley, as I suggested.

Nor with a pinch roller.
