So I am pretty new to arduino boards. The beginner kit that I ordered doesn't seem to include the male connector for the 9V battery that fits into the board. I have the connection for the 9V battery but nothing on the other end of the wires. Is this normal or should I contact arduino?
This is normal. You're supposed to plug the wires from the battery connector into the breadboard:

ah! this makes a lot of sense lol, I am just curious as to why there is a connection on the actual arduino board for the 9V battery?
Thank you for your help!
