Multiple arduino a

I tried to connect more than one arduino uno to my laptop..... Hey I've got 3 ports and 2 boards.

It didn't seem to work.

Is there a thread that explains how to hook up multiple arduino a to the same pc?

Will have to try it again then.

So when I plug board 2 or 3 in.... Each will be on a different "COM" port correct? ( I think this would have to be so that communication can execute )

Do you have an aruino sketch window open 1 for each com port?

Yes. Your operating system (you didn't say which) will assign each board a new port name.

Thanks Spycatcher and James,

My OS is WindowsVista 32bit.

I did try once to plug in 2 but it didn't seem to work. Though now I can't remember the reason. Currently, it seems if I plug in it identifies as COM7. So when I plug in my 2nd board it should be some other com port ID ... Like COM8?

Are the "COM" id's static, meaning ... if I plug a board in to the top USB port will it always be COM7?

... are there ports that I need to stay away from? Also this is a lap top. How will USB docks affect the arduino setup?

Thanks for any and all time spent responding to queries!

It's been my experience that Windows will do one of two things, depending on the device. Either it'll assign the same COM Port, as long as the device is plugged into the same USB port. Or it'll assign the same COM Port regardless of where the device is attached.

Probably depends on the device itself. And in this case device doesn't mean "Arduino board." I'm referring to the actual USB to Serial chip/device, which varies by board.

There isn't a rule, so there is a definitive answer.

The best thing to do is, is try it and see what happens.

The ports that aren't USB.

Also this is a lap top.

Makes no difference

A USB hub or a laptop docking station? Well, regardless, doesn't matter.
