A 555 timer comes to mind.

- Will you be the person demonstrating this or will students be doing the measurements in different groups ?
- Will the circuit be: solderless breadboarded, point to point wired/prototyped or will this made into single use PCB ?

I will try to build this Circuit myself on Breadboard and if it works as attened, I will demonstrate it to my students.
I guess the DVM will reads small ampere values in range of 0.5 to 1 miliampere ?
- The LMV321 (order the SOT23-5 version) is a small I.C. to solder.
