No device found on COM8

Hi. I'm attempting to upload a compiled sketch to an Adafruit Feather M0. It gives me a "No device found on COM8" error message. The LEDs on the M0 are busy flashing.

When I select Tools > Port, it shows my board assigned to COM8, but that line is greyed out, preventing me from trying other options.

I tried a new data cable and a new M0, but it made no difference. Yesterday I was able to upload by selecting COM3, but that option no longer appears. How can I fix this?

Thanks!

Try by downloading the CH340 DRIVER while the arduino board remains connected to the usb port of your pc.

Thanks! Initially I didn't think this worked because I got the same "No device found on COM8" error message.

But then I noticed that I could select a COM7 option under Tools > Ports, and it uploaded! Thank you so much!!

I guess I spoke too soon. I subsequently attempted to upload the same compiled sketch to a different Feather M0, and now I get "No device on COM9", I tried restarting my laptop, then resetting the M0. Now the Tools > Ports IDE option shows that my only option is Port 9... which is greyed out.

I reinstalled the CH340 option while the alternate M0 was plugged into my USB port, but it didn't help. Any help toward realizing torment-free port connections would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi @bitsoplenty. Please try this experiment and then report back with the results:

  1. Connect your Arduino board to your computer with the USB cable.
  2. Press and release the reset button on your Arduino board quickly twice.
  3. If it is already open, close the Tools > Port menu in Arduino IDE.
  4. Open the Tools > Port menu in Arduino IDE.

Now please reply here on the forum thread with the answers to the following question:

  • Do you now see a port for the board in the Tools > Port menu?

Negative. Selecting Tools > Ports yields the same greyed-out "COM9" line.

is arduino board old or newly bought?

I bought it within the last three months or so.

Does the LED on the board that is labeled "#13" start pulsing after you perform the double reset procedure I described?

It does not.

Make sure the USB cable is fully inserted into the USB socket on the board and your computer. It might not be getting a proper electrical connection.

I've written a page here regarding connection issues. The apps may help you

Thank you. I've tried two different data cables, and I'm sure they're fully inserted.

Thank you for the comprehensive page. I've skimmed through it once, and I'll take a closer look at it later today.

OK, unfortunately from the information you shared I am led to the conclusion that the problem is caused by your board having suffered permanent physical damage and that you will need to buy a replacement. However, I am not very familiar with the Feather M0 board (I own several Adafruit boards, but don't happen to have this one) so it is possible I might be missing something. Hopefully one of the other forum helpers can provide a solution for recovering the board.

Thanks for giving this some thought, and for giving me your frank assessment. I'm going to look for potential risks in my circuitry to see if there are additional precautions I can take to protect my Feather boards.
