Official support status of Arduino Due and missing ARM64 fix for arduino:sam core

Hi,

I would like to ask about the current official support status of the Arduino Due. The board is still listed as supported hardware, but development activity around the arduino:sam core appears to have slowed down. Is the Due still officially maintained?

A second question concerns the installation issue on ARM64 Linux (e.g. Raspberry Pi). The arduino:sam core cannot be installed because the toolchain packages do not include ARM64‑compatible binaries.

I am aware of the existing community workarounds. But as a customer, I would like to know whether an official fix or an updated toolchain for ARM64 is planned.

Any clarification on:

  • the long‑term support status of the Arduino Due, and

  • whether an official ARM64‑compatible toolchain update is expected

would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,
Josef

A quick look at the git repos suggests that none of the 32-bit ports of ArduinoCore are actively maintained.

I suppose that it is officially still supported. Which in general means that one can still buy the board.

But that does not necessarily imply that newer versions of the core will be released to address bugs or new features.

Regarding support for ARM64 computers, I don't give you any chance for an official port of the core.

Well, supported usually implies more than just being available for purchase.

From a technical perspective, the core itself already works on ARM64 systems — the only blocker is the very old GCC toolchain bundled with the core, which simply isn’t compatible with ARM64.

Updating that toolchain would be a genuine low‑hanging fruit: it would immediately restore ARM64 compatibility without requiring any changes to the core itself.
