Opening Serial Monitor in a different window

Hello.
I'm using Arduino IDE version 2.3.7. When I try to open Serial Monitor, it opens in the IDE window. Is there a way to open Serial Monitor in a different window?

Hi @umehmet12. The Arduino IDE developers are tracking this request here:

I know it is not what you are asking for, but some prefer to have the Serial Monitor panel located at the right side of the Arduino IDE window instead of the default location at the bottom. In case you might find it to be an improvement, I'll provide instructions you can follow to configure Arduino IDE to use that layout:

  1. Press the Ctrl+Shift+P keyboard shortcut (Command+Shift+P for macOS users) to open the "Command Palette".
A menu will appear on the editor toolbar:
  2. Select the "Preferences: Open Settings (UI)" command from the menu.
ⓘ You can scroll down through the list of commands to find it or type the name in the field.
A "Preferences" tab will open in the Arduino IDE main panel.
  3. Type arduino.monitor.dockPanel in the "Search Settings" field of the "Preferences" tab.
  4. Select "right" from the menu under the "Arduino › Monitor: Dock Panel" setting.
  5. Close the Preferences tab by clicking its X icon.

A workaround is to open a second instance of the IDE and attach that to the same COM port and use that as your Serial monitor. You can also use a separate terminal emulator such as PuTTY or Coolterm but if you do that then you must close their serial connection before uploading code to the Arduino

Haha, funny. Still tracking after 5 years and many updates.
Requests like this will never happen.
Another issue with v2 is that it won't open an archived sketch on a NAS.
That's why I still keep the old 1.8.19 handy.
Moving the monitor window to the side is a much better option for a PC.

If you are using the IDE under Windows I prefer to use a seperate serial monitor app.
Termite

is a portable app that is easy to set up and use, and can log the output to a file.

Thank you for the information. I saw the link you mentioned, reviewed it, but since it didn't provide a solution, I wanted to start a new thread. I also really liked the method you mentioned for moving the terminal screen to the right side of the IDE. I'm grateful.

Thank you for your reply. I'm having trouble with this when teaching Arduino to my students. I will definitely try the alternative terminal screen method you suggested.
