Optical Speed Gates / Timing Gate Timing

Hi there,

I've been searching for a DIY Speed Sprint Timing project. Can anyone help me?

What distance is x?

X can be ''any'' distance. From up to 5 meters up to even 30 meters. To measure start / sprint time.

What ideas have you thought of? We are here to help not do the whole project.

How are you going to connect the sensors back to the Arduino?

Have you designed your program?

How are you going to time the run?

For sensors you could probably use the same sensors that are used on garage doors or make your own, the sensors I am referring to stop the door from closing if there is an obstruction. I mention the garage door sensors because they work over the distance that is close the distance across a number of lanes.

I designed once gates with continuous modulated IR, narrow beam IR diodes, and common 38Khz IR receivers.
Worked well upto 5-6meters (Y-distance) in bright-ish indoor conditions. Not sure how far in sunlight.
I used battery powered Cmos 555 transmitters (60+ hours on 2xAA NiMh).
And display powered receivers (XLR mic cable).
What is your building experience.
Leo..
