just like the title says my pc reads my arduino leonardo as a usb serial device only. but the ide reads it as a leonardo board. i cant upload any hex files
quick update. I can use sample files like blink but i cant upload hex files. or use xloader or anything like that
also if i press the reset button, it does not change the com number
Normally the reset to bootloader is a quick double tap not a single tap.

Uploading to a Lenoardo is a two step process. First step is the reset (IDE does this by opening and closing the Serial port with a baudrate of 1200 baud) followed by the upload.
In the IDE, file -> preferences and enable verbose output during upload. Next observe in the output window what happens when you upload e.g. blink.
A single tap of the reset button should work, it does on my Leonardo. If the reset button does not result in a reset, the reset button is broken 
Afterthought:
The Leonardo identifies itself as Arduino Leonardo (COMX) in Windows; if you're using Windows and it does not identify itself as that, it's not a Leonardo and the com port will probably not change because of that.
