Personal Safety Keychain with Mobile App

Hello! We have an arduino project about making a personal safety keychain using motion sensor connected to mobile app via bluetooth. As someone who's not knowledgeable about arduino, I need your help!

so far, here are the materials we have (or what we put on our paper, at least):
Hardware Components

Arduino Uno (1) - Controls all components
Motion Sensor (1) - Detects bag tilt, sudden
movement, or rummaging
BLE Module (1) - Sends SOS to mobile app
LEDs (1-3) - Flashes during SOS
Resistors (assorted) - LED protection
LiPo Battery (1) Main power
LiPo Charger (1) Safely charges battery

I'm not sure which type of components should I buy ( since it has different types on online shops) and if the components that we are going to use are actually correct. If you guys want to give us references, that would help a lot, too!

I would love to hear your suggestions. Thank you in advance!

Start by explaining exactly what you want to build in plain English. Describe what the user does, what the system does in response, and how it should behave. Focus only on actions and results, not on electronics or code.

From that you’ll be able to derive what’s needed in terms of equipment

what we want to build is a personal safety keychain that you can put on your bag's zipper. using the motion sensor, it can detect if someone wants to open your bag aggressively (like, actually wanting what's inside your bag and not just bumping on it). it can be activated/connected with the app using the bluetooth module.

we have no buzzers or noisy alerts. tbh I'm not even sure if we still need the LEDs. the alert itself is mostly on the app (once aggressive motion from the arduino is detected, the app will automatically call the authorities and emergency contacts).

here's the summary of the project so far. but I'm not sure how we can execute the hardware and code because I am not knowledgeable yet and our prof only teaches us the arduino basics/arduino learning kit.

you could pick a board like the Arduino Nano 33 BLE Sense Rev2 . It has built in sensor and AI capabilities that you could use to recognize movement.

You could also look at the Arduino Nano 33 IoT and add a motion sensor. Those are small form factor boards with advanced capabilities that you will likely need to recognize

as you say.

thank you so much! is that the only hardware that we need to improve? or are there anything else that we need to change?

you could use the equipment you listed in your first post, it's just much bulkier and you would not want loose wires in the headers for a permanent installation. So a board where you can actually solder stuff or that embeds all what you need might be a better choice.
Also the UNO does not have much RAM, so writing some sort of advanced algorithm that detects aggressive access to the bag content might be challenging. But that can be as simple as a threshold on a movement sensor and not really something smart...

In any case the notification to the phone is going to be challenging and you'll likely hack that for demo purposes by having an app running on the phone and connected to BT component inside the bag.

are there any smaller models of the motion sensor? or I won't need it anymore because the nano you suggested already has a sensor

The bulky part in your list is the UNO itself

ohh okay! thank you so much for the nano suggestion then. last question, can you suggest websites where we can find a reference for this project? like the code and connecting the hardware itself.

Isn’t your project goal to learn how to do this by yourself? Why would you want to get the code and wiring? Invest some time to learn the basics about programming and electronics.

If you don’t want to, just google Arduino movement detection and the name of sensor you plan to use - I’m sure you’ll get tons of hits.

not get the whole code and wiring, but just some reference that we can use. but thanks for all the help! it means a lot.

@mnnees
Do you think there are sites in the Net for each imageable Arduino project with "reference code and wiring"?

A good reference that I use a lot is the sample sketches with each board and library. Picking the best library for the motion sensor will be one of your biggest challenges.

What is the board name in the board selector, I don;t see it. Maybe there is a special boards URL? I am using the default buitin AVR and ESP32 boards.

@mnnees ...

If you search "Arduino Nano Sense BLE" you will find good links for learning...

This link has a sketch for the motion sensor (and many other sketches for other on-board sensors)

And... this is the official documentation for the Arduino Nano BLE Sense, with important data and tutorials...

https://docs.arduino.cc/hardware/nano-33-ble-sense/

thank you very much for your help!! this is a good reference.

what I meant there is maybe just something close or somehow similar with the project we will make. someone here already sent me one and it is exactly what I meant. english isn't my first language so maybe I worded it wrong.

ohh okay thanks for the idea! its a challenge that I am willing to take.

No special URL

The first one for the Nano 33 BLE, the second one for the Nano 33 IoT.

Ah, I was looking for the following as that was what was posted

Are the Sense and rev 2 just assumed? because

Arduino Nano BLE is NOT equal to Arduino Nano 33 BLE Sense Rev2.

Where is the de-obfuscation documentation?
