Position Sensor (Gyroscope) Question

Hi everybody,
I am trying to design a project which needs to sense some tilting. The problem is that the reading must be the same if you turn the device on parallel to the ground or at another angle.
I can't use an accelerometer because it reads acceleration from the start point. But I don't know if a gyroscope measures tilting the way I need it: measuring inclination relative to the ground (as i need) or not, measuring it relative to the start point (where it calibrates when it's turned on).
Thanks in advance.

Since the accelerometer senses the direction of gravity it will give you a tilt relative to ground no matter what angle it is at when you turn it on.

The gyroscope will tell you how fast you are turning but has no way of referencing gravity or ground.

A magnetometer will give you the orientation relative to the local magnetic field but that is usually not parallel with the ground.

The accelerometer is your only choice to sense a tilt relative to UP.
