I'm also interested... I want to get Matlab but since I'm not in school it's expensive. GNU Octave looks like a great solution!

Consider Scilab (free MATLAB replacement). For what I have tried, it works as well as MATLAB but the syntax is slightly different.
It all depends on what you want to do with it.
MATLAB/Simulink has lots of features and many different toolboxes, many of which have no direct Octave alternative, however, most tasks can be achieved using open-source alternatives, in one way or another, however cumbersome.
