SerialTransfer.h - transfer ca. 1kB array via UART between boards

Hi guys,

TLDR: I'm struggling to send larger (1kB) arrays between ESP32 and Teensy4.1, using SerialTransfer.h library.

Situation: I want to send a picture in RGB888, stored in uint8_t picture [width * height * 3] from one board to another. I figured out the code below, which works like a charm, when I send a 5x5px picture.

Problem: When I increase the picture size to e.g. 8x32px (so a little less than 1kB), data does not get fully transferred. My picture array on the receiver side is empty (i.e. 0,0,0) after ca. 84 px already.

Question: Any idea on how to fix this? Is there an alternative way to make use of SerialTransfer.h library to send arrays up to ca. 3kB?

My initial hypothesis was that only 254 packets are transferred --> Need more or bigger packets. However, I failed when trying to modify SerialTansfer library.

Bonus question: Is there any other way to exchange files between the two boards more quickly? Ultimately, I'm aiming to send a 32x32 px picture at ca. 25fps. I failed implementing it with SPI, as apparently neither of the devices supports slave mode?

the library has many features like non blocking, packet delimiters, overhead byte stuffing, CRC-8, working with various Serial protocols,...)

do you need all this ?

Would you be OK to have the Arduino blocked whilst the 3KB data is transferred ?
Would you be OK to not know if the data was sent without issues ?

All packet based data transfer systems have size limits.

If you want to continue with SerialTransfer.h then you need to fragment your data into chunks then
reassemble the pieces at the receiving end.

@J-M-L For both sender and receiver I would not like it to be blocked while transferring. Since the ultimate goal is to send the 3kb approx. 25-30 times per second and I have quite some other time-consuming LED patterns to build / push out via FastLED/OctoWS2811 in parallel.

@mikb55 Thx for the hint, I'll play around with this! I somehow thought, chopping and wrapping around the data was one of the SerialTransfer library features... Might have to do it additionally, though.

3 x 1024 x 10 bits x 25 = 768 000 bauds
So at close to 1 million bauds your hardware serial line is almost 80% busy.so can’t afford much extra communication (resend, sync, …)

What kind of LEDs are you dealing with ?

I got it to work now, even with 32x32 px. Thanks for the hint to make sure multiple packets are sent.

LED output works (at least in the current stage of the project...). I'll be integrating it into a setup with OctoWS2811 shield on Teensy 4.1, which worked great for similar projects in the past.
