Good news! It turned out the fixture was bad, it looks like my hardware is good. I'll double check soon, but for now I have a good feeling about this. Thanks for all your help so far.

Yes, ground on the board is connected to both the xlr and the rs485 board.

5V (4.6) comes from the board, which is powered over usb (for now)
