After posting this on GitHub there is a solution. Change line 130 in SdFatConfig.h and set USE_SPI_ARRAY_TRANSFER to one at about line 130. This will increase the speed from 140 kB/sec to 1700 kB/sec. I hope this helps others using RP2040 boards and Arduino IDE.

Not really. One is writing to an SD card - the other to flash memory which uses a completely different library.
