Something like ESP8266, with SIM card instead of wifi?

Hello! I recently bought my first arduino (?) NodeMcu ESP8266 ESP-12E, and made a water detector that emails me when water is detected, over wifi, after studying various sample codes.

Now, a friend of mine is a farmer, and she needs something like this, however she doesn't have wifi where she needs a water detector. There is a power supply, and cellphone signal is available. It's in the middle of nowhere, so it has to be able to send an SMS or an Email (preferably SMS), not just making any sound. Water detection is the only thing she needs, so I don't want anything large or sophisticated, but I don't know appropriate devices or combination of devices. Could you please suggest me what to do? I would appreciate your suggestion!

You can buy GPRS modules like SIM900 which can be connected to any type of Arduino.

Thank you very much for your reply! I looked at SIM900. Can I connect SIM900 with ESP8266, then ? I still have two extra. Or should I get something else? What would be comparable with ESP8266, that works with sim900 ?

Yes, I would expect it should be possible to use SIM900 with ESP8266.

I realized that SIM 800 is a lot cheaper. I guess I can also go for it? Connection with ESP8266 seems tricky, though. I will have to study.... Thanks a lot for your tips!

I'm not an expert in these modules. When you said sim800 is cheaper, I thought "yes, obviously the older model is going to be cheaper, but what do you lose out on compared the newer, better, but obviously more expensive model?"

So I googled to find out

This is utterly bizarre.

Apparently, someone decided to make a new, better, cheaper version of the sim900. They needed a new name for it, so they thought to themselves "it's newer, better and cheaper than SIM900, so I'll call it... hmm... I know! I'll call it sim800. Then everyone will know it's clearly and obvioulsy newer, cheaper and better than sim900". What the heck???

Wow, that's strange !! Yeah, I was also wondering why SIM 800 got more features than SIM 900.
