I am following this tutorial to learn connecting the stepper motor with A4988.
But after I replace the external power supply with a 12V 20A adaptor, the wire become very hot and the stepper motor is not working. Is it because the current input is too large?
Could you please tell us which wire is getting hot. What ratings on the NEMA 17?
And please post your sketch too.
Links are also helpful.
Some tutorials can be flawed.
the wire between the external power supply and the A4988 (VMOT and GND) is getting hot.
stepper motor requires: 3.3v 1.5A
NEMA17 tells about the mechanical mounting and tells nothing about the electrical data.
Datasheet of the stepper please.
1.5 amp looks like possible but drop the 3.3 volt.
What current has the driver been set for?

Does it still work if you go back to using the external 8-35V supply?

That's too much. The stepper was a 1.5 amp You told. Don't make toast of the stepper.

I only get that adaptor at home...
Also DO NOT power up until you have COMPLETED the circuit.
And ensure you have fitted the heatsink as this is a crucial component !
The video explains the VREF from 9 minutes in !
I presume that's where you got the idea ?

You need to re-test it with the power supply, you may have burned out the A4988.

The A4988 driver can handle 1 Ampere motor current per winding, maximum.
So be sure to set the driver current limit to 1 Ampere or below.
