Strange Output on Serial Monitor

Total newbie to Arduino and these forums. Attached is an image of a simple led blink sketch along with the serial monitor output. Why the strange characters in place of numbers 1 through 12, while 13 through 20 output fine? The pattern repeats. Thanks in advance. John
