Sync variables between devices removed from unknown cause

Has anyone experienced a loss of synchronized variables in the Arduino IoT Cloud between two devices?

I have one device that no longer shows the sync in the Setup section. The other device shows that the sync is still active. Thus, the device that lost the sync no longer triggering the device that shows the active sync. These devices haven't been updated for several months and have been running normally.

It appears that Arduino may have done a system-wide update a few days ago. All devices under management rebooted. Wondering if anyone else has had this problem.

Thanks,

Chris

I have noticed the same loss of sync between variables that have been successfully synced for quite some time. Also today I am experiencing issues with syncing, being unable to sync variables from one device to two others.

I am able to select from the variables list, more than one variable to sync with, but when the settings are saved, the indication is that only one (or none) of the sync's are in place:

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the entirety of the issue, but I can confirm you are not alone in this issue.

Best regards,
JP

Hello, I have the same issue with some of my variables

Thanks for the feedback JP, maaartin.

Just realized that I was spelling sync wrong! Fixed those in the original post

I was able to reestablish the sync in Thing (T1) to Thing (T2) by:

  1. Edit the variable in the Setup section of T1 and,
  2. Re-selecting the original variable from T2
  3. Do an OTA on T1 which worked fine

The site process then returned to normal operation as soon as T1 finished the OTA and powered up.

What's odd is that the synced variable in the Setup section of T2 shows a "sync" but it doesn't specify what it's synced to. It used to show "synced to variable X on T1". Nevertheless, the value of the variable in the Setup section of T2 is showing the value of the variable from T1 with normal updates.

What's also odd is that when I try to reestablish the sync in the Setup of T2, the variable from T1 is "grey'd" out, meaning that I cannot select it.

I'm thinking there are some updates going on in the background of the IoT Cloud platform which is causing these errors. Perhaps, Arduino is simplifying the process now by only having to select a sync on one side of the Things, not both as I've had to do in the past. This is more intuitive. Or maybe I was doing it wrong in the first place and Arduino has fixed their bug that let it happen?

I noticed the same issue since yesterday (12th december). I am even not able to save the sync variables. The save button seems to have no effect. When I come back after saving a sync variable, the list of sync variables is empty again. I tried in different browsers, same effect.

same problem. all my previous sync settings are disappeared and all my works are ruined...

Hi all. Thanks for reporting this. I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

The Arduino Cloud developers have made a possible fix for the problem. Please check to see if the Variable sync feature is now working correctly and let me know what you find.

Thank you for addressing this issue! I just now tried to do a variable sync, and although the selection process and indication of variable sync appears to be as is was prior to the problem, I cannot save my selection:

I tried both Firefox and Chrome browsers with the same result. Since it has only been an hour since you reported the fix, I will wait and try again a little later.

JP

Currently variables seem to sync fine. :slightly_smiling_face:
By the way i have a question if it is possible two sync three or more variables ??

Thank you for addressing this and fixing the bug so fast. Devices are working normally now and have been since your update. We appreciate the support and keep up the great work!

We sync two or more variables between Things, T1 & T2. We also sync variables from T1 to T2, and the based on timing of that action, other variables on T2 back to T1.

If you're looking to go from T1 to T2 & T3 (or more), I can think of a work-around if var X on T1 cannot be synced to both T2 & T3 at the same time. Just make copy of X on T1 (float/int/long/char Xc1 = X), and then share X to T2 and Xc1 to T3. And if you have to do more, then make more copies like Xc2, Xc3, etc.

I have now successfully synchronized variables across 4 devices.

Device 1 is the source of data (variable set up as Read Only) and the data from device 1 is being shared with device 2, 3 and 4 (variable on device 2, 3 and 4 are Read/Write).

I thought about the work around hermosranchllc mentioned, but I found it not to be necessary after the fix.

I did notice that I had to refresh the web page after every variable sync change in order to see the final changes. I got hung up a for a while before I realized this.

As far as I can tell, the issue if fixed. Thanks to all!

JP

Thanks so much for testing and reporting your findings everyone. I passed the feedback on to the developers. I'm glad it is working now.
