i have ch314a black edition, i get no output when i connect gnd to gnd from usb to modem , when i connect only rxd of usb to any pins of modem ,i see a lot of readings filling up putty console terminal. my modem is powered by 5v , and chip gets vcc 3.26 volts as per datasheet. here is what i see when only rx is connected to modem any 4 pins of uart --

when i touch the gnd of usb to gnd of modem it will stop.
please kindly help me what should be done to rectify it, i just want to see bootloader of my modem, some say the ch431a is giving 5v and it might not work properly, can this be a problem, so should i mod it to make the uart pins to 3.3 v ? thank you.

What is a CH431a? You also mention a CH314a. Possibly a typing mistake but we can't guess what you have.

I tried to google it but it seems to be a programmer, not a modem. Can you please clarify what you're trying to do and how.?

What bit-rate are you using on both ends of the serial connection ?

if it ch431a - it's not a programmer, this is USB-UART interface chip, like well-known ch340

its the com 8 port , speed 115200 in putty ,data bits - 8 ,stop bits-1 parity and flow control is none. the port settings are same in device manager port com8 properties

i dont have arduino. sorry.. i dint know where to ask , i have this programmer and a adsl modem for which i am trying to read its boot loader ,so when i tried reading it, i get this result.

Are these EXACTLY the same on your modem ?

I suspect that you receive binary data and not text and hence see the "strange" text. Can you configute putty to display binary data? Else use another terminal program (on Windows e.g. RealTerm).

There seems to be Windows software for that programmer (e.g. Ch341a Programmer Software Free Download - Receiver Pro) which might give more sensible output.

its a adsl phone line internet modem, i want to see its bootloader , i have no idea what the modems speed or data bit etc. please tell me about this -- " i get no output when i connect gnd to gnd from usb programer to uart pins of adsl modem , when i connect only rxd of usb to any pins of modem ,i see a lot of readings filling up putty console terminal.

i have that software , its installed ,that software i used to flash the chip after i desoldered it from board and soldered to usb programmer- the chip was identified with no problem, now i resoldered to the modem board now, i want to see the bootloader as its the same malfunction as before. i have tried teraterm too, its the same weird characters in any baud speed numbers , i will see how to display this binary data in putty .. update i kept binary in realterm software,its all 1110000 again and again . i also modded to 3.3v to this programmer as some was saying its giving 5 v , the chip works good in 3.3v but the result is the same. only rx of usb programmer to any pins in modem uart pins give data ,if connected gnd to gnd. the reading stops.. the readings are unreadable.. thank you for administrator to keep this thread alive.

You need both GND and RX of programmer connected to GND and TX of modem. Otherwise you are getting just random garbage.

Check the datasheet of the SoC in that modem to find the correct port settings.
