Updating board got stuck

When adding a arduino uno R4 wifi i have to update the board. This should take a few minutes but after about an half hour it’s still the same. Using chrome on a mac.

What goes wrong here? Any tips to verfy?

I would assume it is updated so shut down the app and try again.

Tried. But the new device isnt created…

I am not sure what that means.
After several attempts to update, close open IDE, all the usual things a hard core user does (including rt click the Agen to load it) I get as far as the following screen but can't find a way past that.

if i continue here i get the update screen. But then it seems to get stuck. Can see the led, xt rx blink and get some animation on the screen but no improvement.

Arduino R4 is programmable from the offline and online ide. Did a reset of the arduino, Did write some sketches on it (blink and simple webserver, so bot the chips got some new data). Did even a restore for the usb connectivity…

tried a new board and got no problem. Updated fine in a few minutes. Is there another way to restore the arduino uno R4 to factory settings? Or is there another way to flash the update? Its the update for the “device provisioning 2.0”

Please do this:

  1. Start Arduino Cloud Agent if it is not already running.
    If you see an Arduino Cloud Agent icon on the macOS "menu bar" then it is running.
  2. Click on the Arduino Cloud Agent icon (looks like an Arduino logo) that is located in the macOS menu bar.
    A menu will open.
  3. Select "Open Debug Console" from the menu.
    The "Arduino Cloud Agent Debug Console" page will open in your browser.
  4. Click the third button from the right in the toolbar at the bottom of the "Arduino Cloud Agent Debug Console" page.
    A menu will open.
  5. Select "HIDE 'LIST' COMMANDS" from the menu.
  6. Click the "CLEAR LOG" button that is located near the bottom right corner of the "Arduino Cloud Agent Debug Console" window.
  7. Leaving the "Arduino Cloud Agent Debug Console" browser tab open, make another attempt at updatging, just as you did before when you encountered the problem.
  8. Wait until you are certain the process has stalled. You can determine this by taking a look at the "Arduino Cloud Agent Debug Console" browser tab. If you don't see any new output printed in the left hand panel of that page even after some minutes have passed, that would be an indication that the stall has occurred. Likewise, if you saw that it was only printing the same content over and over again in the left hand panel of that page for some time, that would also be an indication that the process had stalled.
  9. Click the "EXPORT LOG" button in the bottom right corner of the "Arduino Cloud Agent Debug Console" window.
    A download of a file named agent-log.txt will start.
  10. Open the downloaded "agent-log.txt" file in any text editor.
  11. Press the Command+A keyboard shortcut to select all the text.
  12. Press the Command+C keyboard shortcut.
    This will copy the selected text to the clipboard.
  13. Open a reply here on this forum topic by clicking the "Reply" button.
  14. Click the <CODE/> icon on the post composer toolbar. This will add the forum's code block markup (```) to your reply to make sure the output is correctly formatted.
  15. Press the Command+V keyboard shortcut. This will paste the output into the code block.
  16. Move the cursor outside of the code block markup before you add any additional text to your reply.
  17. Click the "Reply" button to publish the post.

Update got stuck while updating. Didn’t got the message i got with a new arduino R4 wifi trying the same update to deconnect from usb en reconnect.

@ptillisch did you find anything in the logs? As far as i can see the update was succesfull but then i got stuck. Is there a way to fix this?

These are data being sent over the serial port by the "provisioning" sketch program that runs on the UNO R4 WiFi board when creating an Arduino Cloud IoT Device for the board. The data is encoded as Base64.

After decoding, we can understand what the board is sending:

Unfortunately I don't know how to interpret this.

The "Connection to "Techniek" failed" is clear: this means the board is attempting to connect to the Wi-Fi access point with the SSID of "Techniek" and failing. I attempted to reproduce the fault by turning off my access point so that the UNO R4 WiFi will fail to connect, the "Updating Your Board for Improved Setup" process still completes successfully for me.

So I don't have any reason to believe that the failure of your board to connect to the Wi-Fi access point is the cause of the problem you are experiencing. However, it would be worth looking into why it is failing to connect just in case that might be a factor.

What looks more interesting is this part of the logs:

SerialAgentClass::handleInit Error receiving packet

During the Device creation process, Arduino Cloud sends commands to the board over the serial port, as you can see here:

the "SerialAgentClass::handleInit Error receiving packet" error indicates that the program running on UNO R4 WiFi was not able to recognize the command sent by Arduino Cloud. The commands look perfectly fine though.

Maybe the data is being corrupted somehow? If you have any external circuitry, modules, or shields attached to the UNO R4 WiFi board, disconnect everything so that you are only working with the board alone and then try again. That will eliminate the possibility that any external circuitry might be interfering with the board's operation.

If you have a different USB cable, try switching the cable you use. We have had several reports of strange problems that turned out to be caused by using low quality/defective/damaged cables with the UNO R4 WiFi board. I believe the problem with these cables is that the Wi-Fi radio on the board can draw significant amounts of current while performing communication operations. If the cable is not able to provide sufficient current, this can case the board to misbehave. It is a bit confusing because these events only last for a very short moment, so the board can appear to be perfectly happy with an insufficient cable. The board's inability to connect to the Wi-Fi access point might exacerbate this problem because it might be that the radio draws more current under these conditions.

The wifi it wants to connect to is from a school who asked to get there board running again. Wrote a simpele webserver sketch to it. The board connected to my network at home after that. So i taught the data from there wifi was erased. There is nothing connected to the board. As cable i used the same as i used to try updating a new board. It’s a official arduino cable where i can switch to usb or usb c. Tried both but no luck.

the teacher who gave it to me mentioned his students tried to work with it from the online and offline ide. Did write some different sketches to it and a reset. But somehow its not erased completely.

Is it possible to completely reset the board? Any other suggestions?
