I'm not sure of the history; it this stage there is one, the Mega2560. I think there used to be 1280 based one (simply called Mega).
On the web you can find originals and clones and that is probably what confuses you. You might also still be able to find 1280 based ones. If you buy from this site (arduino.cc), you will at least know what you get :).
PS 1280 is the processor on the board; the newer one has the 2560 processor.
thanks for the answer.
Are the Libraries available for uno also available for mega ?
I think most libraries will automatically handle whether you compile for Uno or Mega or ... There might be some exceptions; I only have Uno boards so can't be sure.
There are different versions of Arduino Mega2560. The most recent is R3 and have little bit different look since Arduino and Genuino exists.
I think, UNO and Mega are the most used boards. There are differences mostly in pin number and their configuration. Most of shields for UNO works with Mega and also SW is similar for all ATmegas and should work because UNO and Mega are the "main stream".
On top of the historic driven original Arduino and Genuino versions there are the clones which contribute to the variety.

Is that "there are" or is that "there were"? I mean, Arduino no longer sells Megas based on 1280 (to my knowledge) but as I said, one might still find them on the market. Leaving clones out of the equation for this; they can be anything.
There were
probably in market offer sense. I'm not seller but I think, you can buy only the last version of genuine boards. I own Arduino Mega2560 R3 version with older look and nowadays is unavailable in my location's markets.
I have this:
