Thanks for the input, but if you had taken the time to actually read the post, my question was about false 'one definition rule' warnings and not about the overflow issue (which, as you pointed out, is caused by sloppy coding in a library that I happen to be using).
In a prior lifetime I was a successful instrument-rated small airplane pilot, with literally thousands of hours logged flying in inclement weather. Here 'successful' means living to reach old age, as single-pilot single-engine instrument flight is a known pilot-killer. The best advice I ever heard was 'never let your airplane go where your mind hasn't already been', meaning to make sure you were always mentally ahead of the situation (nowadays this is called 'situational awareness').
Maybe there is an analogous saying for this instant-response world - "never let your fingers go where your mind hasn't already been"? Or maybe 'RTFQ'?
