Weird problem with Arduino IDE 2.3.10

I went to start working on some code and when i call up IDE i cant see any data, even selecting new Sketch it looks like the pic here. I can see the margine line where the new sketch code resides, but cant see any of it, nor see anything i type. typing DOES change the margin line thing. Tryed reseting the compute (running Zorin ) and even a complete shutdown and restart, but the same. The pulldown menues work and i can see the selections and use them, but anything in the code are is blank. If i click on the board type box, it shows nothing but "select board" but if i connect the board the box increases in size but still shows nothing?

Im at a loss with this one, hope someone has a clue

Will a "select-all" (CTRL-A) highlight the code text?

All that does is highlight the margin lines light blue, still no visible text

When you "select-all" (CTRL-A), "copy" (CTRL-C) the "no visible text" and "paste" (CTRL-V) it into a window (notepad, for example), is any text pasted?

I did a copy then pasted it into Libreoffice, and it does show. because of the margin lines i saw and the way they moved by typing anything i assumed it was typing buy just invisible text. Also, while the drop down menus show and seem to work, the "confirmation or selection" bubbles are also blank. ????

Looks like Zorin is forcing text/foreground colors.

What are these "bubbles?"

they would be the "selection or confimation. you can see them on some of the sub menues, for things like save, OK etc.
I have only been using Zorin for a week or so, gradually transferring over, so when i have issues like this i wonder if its Arduino or zorin, as my confidence ist up there yet with zorin (took 4 attempts at installing it, first attempt at adding as a dual with windows actually killed a portion of windows by partitioning on top of some windows data. Finally i installed it on a completely separate hard drive).
I may have no choice but to completly remove Arduino and IDE and reinstall it.

Maybe selecting another theme (under preferences) can be used as a workaround. The sequence in the dropdown is

  1. Light
  2. Dark
  3. Light High Contrast
  4. Dark High Contrast

I tried that with all selections (which were invisible) and they change the look but stil invisible text.

Have you tried the Arduino for Linux AppImage (IDE version 1)? It's one file, no installing, just download, give permissions and execute.

i will check, i know when i first installed the arduino IDE i did it via an img file, and it never worked properly. The i just used Zorins software section to install it and it worked great for a week. I may have to remove it and reinstall it and see if that helps.

Well, uninstalled Arduino IDE, shut down the machine, removed the Arduino folder and using the software section of Zorin reinstalled IDE v2. Exact same problem so it looks like its a Zorin issue. Arduino IDE is the only one this is happening to and im at a loss now. I am getting so frustrated with the reliability i seem to be getting with Zorin Im not sure if dumping windows for Linus was a good move.

Maybe time to ask help on the Zorin forum.

Were there any Zorin updates just before it failed?

What you showed there is no board selected, select UNO then select the blink sample and see what happens.

It happens no matter what board is selected, or what sketch is selected, even if its a blank new one. As for Zorin updates, i honestly cant remember. I know i did manualy search for any updates after this big showed up and it did do one update which made no difference. I have removed and reinstalled 4 times now, and the last thing i can think of is going to one of the older versions of IDE listed on the download page

We may be able to help you to solve whatever problem you had using the official build of Arduino IDE. The forum helpers are likely to be more familiar with the quirks of the official build, since it is most commonly used.

If you want to give it a try, just provide a detailed description of the problem you encounter and we'll proceed from there.

Just installed Arduino IDE ver 1.8.19 and the problem is gone. Think i will just use this version for now as i do have a project i want to finish. hopefully this version will hold up for me

Well, that was short lived. While it displayed the code field text properly it would not compile even a new empty sketch. gave many obsolete path errors. tried to uninstall, but it would, says it did, but its still there, installed the IDE ver 2 and still wont show text areas. Getting very frustrated with both Zorin and Arduino IDE. Starting to loose all faith in any kind of reliability\ty and questioning if Zorin is worth it, if another distribution like mint would be better, or if im stuck with crappy windows 10 forever.
Appreciate all the help i have recieved here, but so far a 4 min project in coding have turned into well over a week on nothing

I have used the Arduino IDE versions 1.8.x on both Linux Mint and MX Linux without any issues. I have been using Arduino IDE version 2.x.x since it was released and so far it has been fine except for the odd known issue. I skipped 2.3.9. AppLab was another story.

As an experiment, try changing the Zorin desktop theme. Some themes can produce strange interaction.

Wayland sometimes can had rendering bugs in some applications. You could try switching to X11 instead. Log out, then on your profile find the cog icon. Click this and select 'Zorin Desktop on X'. Enter password and log in normally and try the IDE again.

One other possibility might be the graphics driver. It might be worth updating it if a later version is available.

BTW, I always download the IDE updates files from the official arduino.cc website. The Linux distro ones are often a number of versions behind and modified in various ways by the distro provider.

thank you so much for the info, i will try that as visual studio is confusing as hell lol. Will let you know what happens
