I've spent significant time searching the web for an original source for VirtualWire. There are countless sources but none that I've found are an official source. Where do you suggest I download it from?
RadioHead. 
It's more up to date. Use the OOK driver.
Virtual wire has been superseded by Radiohead library
VirtualWire works fine and is available from the author at his official site.
Virtual Wire is no longer being supported and Radiohead is written by the same author and available on the same site
