Yun External Antenna

Hello all- I have found much discussion but no clear answer about the issue of connecting an external antenna to the Yun.

It seems the correct consensus is that the connector on the Yun board is a female SWF connector, like these:http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en/connectors-interconnects/coaxial-connectors-rf/1443098?k=swf%20connector

but there doesn't seem to be a male adapter that will mate with this???

someone mentioned this: http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en?site=us;lang=en;vendor=490;Keywords=MXHS83QE3000

but I'm not sure ( even at $50) if this will fit the connection on the Yun...

Has anyone successfully connected an external antenna? and saw signal gain?

Thanks Much!

Hi! I gave up using the embedded wifi interface with an external antenna... the cheapest (and working!) solution I found was to use an usb->wifi adapter with an RP-SMA dipole antenna (8 euros on ebay):

I was able to put my Yun in a metal box and still have it connected to my wireless network... hope this solution is suitable for you too!

That is a pretty cool solution! Thanks for sharing.

How about swapping the connector on board to a male one so that you can use the lead from any canibalised wifi router

From what I read about the Hornet AR9331 Wifi chip used on Yun, the two antenna inputs are set up for diversity (automatically selects which has the better signal strength). So unless you put an antenna with more gain than the onboard antenna, you will never see any change in the link quality (will continue to select the internal antenna). I have doubts that any of the monopole antennas you typically see will offer any improvement.

FYI. I have managed to successfully attach an external antenna to the yun.

Thanks all for your help- I did get the external antenna connected, and it definitely, reliably, has boosted signal strength. I am getting good WiFi signal 150' from source. I used this cable to connect the antenna:

The connector is very tall an if you use a shield you will have to add male-female header pins between Yun and shield. Also there is an adapter between the cable and antenna:

and the antenna from adafruit:

in line of sight environments;-

Every 6 dBi antenna gain will be double the distance.

Good work on finding all of the parts, but if I'm reading it properly, it totals out to about $60 for the parts? That's an expensive antenna!

How well does the connector stay attached to the Yun? My understanding is that it doesn't latch in place?

Yes, about $60...expensive :o BUT for my application, it was the only way I could figure to get the range I needed- but like I said, it gets a strong signal 150' away from a standard wireless router.

As for the connection, it is solid. you press it down and it latches in place. the only drawback is that the connector here is tall, and if you are putting a shield on the Yun you need to have an addition set of male-female header pins to give the shield clearance.

FYI:

Dragino yun shield support external antenna natively

Simply swap antenna.

Plan C:

Use The Yun shield by remove 0R resistor which connects to internal antenna.

are you saying that the connector on the aerial on the dragino yun shield is the male one?

I wonder if they can be bought separately as I can't find a reasonably priced pigtail or male connector anywhere.

I've tried to stuff a wire into the female connector on the pigtail I have, but can't find a small enough wire that fits reliably.

You could easily get those type connectors from Ebay, or shopping at Ebay's sourcing - Shenzhen.

more than one floors of shopping malls sell nothing but cable connectors.

While you are shopping cable connector in Shenzhen do not forget enjoy nice food.
