110V Pot or Optocoupler

I was looking for the least code intensive method to digitally control a 110v .0025 amp control circuit. Looking to replace a manual 500k or 1M potentiometer, with something digital. It looks like the easiest method of control would be PWM of an optocoupler resistor.

Does anyone know of a better way to control this?

Would a phase controller mimic resistance on the AC current?

Thanks for any tips.

What is the schematic that is currently using the 500k or 1M potentiometer on 110v?

Do you want something like SCR controllable rectifier on mains ?

If it's "a light dimmer" device, forget about the potentiometer circuit entirely. Just detect zero crossings and trigger the SCR with pulses timed from the crossings.

Yes, but $$$$$$
