I see a lot of simular problems flying around and tied some of the suggestions
My Config : Ardino-UNO connected via USB to both my MacBook and my Ubuntu machine have problems (used to work a couple of months ago with the MacBook)
the serial port connector is grayed ou;t does not seem to detect the Uno-board. installed recommended USBdrivers; connected restart ;...
Nothing so far
Included the Ubuntu output when connecting the serial monitor. Mac has a similar response.
What version of IDE do you have?
What version of Ubuntu do you have?
Have you checked your user groups? You must belong to uucp and dialout groups. From a terminal, type "groups".
edit: Insure you downloaded the correct IDE version for your operating system.

Got it working on my Ubuntu 14...;
Setting the group-rights of my account did the trick, but also needed a hard reboot, which I normally rarely do on this system.
Still busy with my Mac, probably user-richts as well.
I downloaded the latest Versions of the IDE
