About the burnt component on the NodeMCU

On my NodeMCU, the wire from the 5V pin got desoldered and touched the GND pin, which caused the component shown in the image to burn out. Does anyone know what this burned component is?

  • Looks like it might be a diode.

  • If it went up in smoke, something is seriously wrong elsewhere on the PCB.

I removed the burnt component and shorted its two pads, and my project worked perfectly. I just want to replace the burnt component with a new one to ensure protection for the circuit.

Schottky diode, most probably.

ChatGPT said it’s a Schottky diode. I have an MBR560 Schottky diode on hand. Would it be okay to use it?

  • WOW !
You are very lucky, maybe buy a lottery ticket :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

  • Now something made this fail, perhaps your input voltage was/is too high or there is still a problem that will raise its ugly head later :face_with_spiral_eyes:

  • Confirm one side on the component goes to the Vin pin.
Google SMD diode 0805 and 0603

  • What is the pad spacing ?

Depends on the spec of the burnt out diode and the spec of the diode you have. This component is VERY precise. If you can't read the diode code or there is nothing on the board, google a board datasheet/wiring diagram especially the power tree. The diode will be attached to VIN.
The MBR560 is 5Ampls and 60Volts, BOTH are too high. A 1N5817 is 1A at 5V. You can find other similar parts with google.

Thanks.

Most common part is an SMA pkg SS14. 1A fwd current, 40V reverse voltage. A Forward Voltage Drop of about 0.4V at 1A.

  • As a guess, the OP’s component is a 0805 footprint.

  • If the OP has a regular silicon diode in 0805, they can try that.
Maybe try a component from a donor board.

  • Remember, diodes need to be installed in the right direction.

Method for easy removal of a component.
