Activate a relay without any additional electricity

Hi all,
so I would like to switch on the lights on my wardrobe as soon as I open the doors.
The lights get their power from a transformer (that puts out DC 24 Volts) which is always "running".
It would be easy to just use a door contact switch that closes the 24 Volt circuit and switches the lights on.
However I dont want the transformer to pull electricity 24/7. I only want the transformer to run if the lights want to switch on.
Therefore I would need something like a relay between the wall plug and the transformer that activates as soon as the contact switches get triggered. So it would need to activate if some wires without any power get connected.
Is this possible?

Thanks
Julian

To do what you describe the door switch needs to turn the mains supply on and off. Is it rated to do that and are its contacts shielded to prevent contact with them ?

Why not use a battery powered light switched by the door? It will only be on for short periods so could last for a long while

Well they are actually. But I would like to have two different circuits. One DC 24v circuit for the lights and the switch and one for the AC 230v that is independent from the 24 volt and just goes through the relay that somehow gets triggered by opening a door.

If it is possible I don't want to use batteries or any second power source.

If the mains supply is to be normally off then you obviously need a switch to turn it on when the door opens. This could be done using a relay but what is going to power the relay ?

If you mean that the door switch is safe to use with mains voltage then use it to switch on the transformer instead of the lights. That in turn supplies 24V to the light

The Relay is directly plugged into the power outlet. So it basically has power all the time. It just needs something like a switch to foreward the power to the transformer.
Like if it would have two additional connector that activate it if they get connected via a wire.

You mean like the one on the door, for instance ?

Exactly

Install one of these...

So what is the problem ?
