Breadboards are great. PCBs have their place.
Here's a middle ground: A "breakout board" for Arduino Pro Mini. You plug the Arduino into a socket, and all the pins become available to solder pads and, if you chose to install them, screw terminals. And there is a generous supply of pads for ancilliary components, including many connected to Vcc and Gnd.
