Arduino compatible optical mouse sensor

Hi,

I'm looking for an Arduino compatible optical mouse sensor no larger than 0.25 sq inches (0.5 in x 0.5 in), preferably with an I2C. If that technology doesn't exist, what would be involved in making something like that?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

There may be some useful ideas in this dated post. The parts don't seem to be available now, but possibly could be salvaged from an old optical mouse.

Thank you for your response, however I'm looking for something reproducible for prototyping. What parts does that sensor consist of?

In principle, any currently available optical mouse sensor can be mounted on a prototype PCB.

I suspect many are proprietary parts for large manufacturers of PC accessories, so do your research.
