I was using the arduino IDE 1.8.12 on Mac OS with no problem and when I tried to open it again today it closes just after initializing. This happened at the same time I was asked to upgrade to Catalina but the issue occurred even before I installed Catalina. Now I am on Catalina, I tried downloading arduino twice but had the same issue, and also when I downloaded an older version? 1.8.10. When I open terminal and type open Arduino (as another user had suggested) I get the message "No such file or directory."

hmmm I did look at the other replies in the forum and tried both using an older version and checking the terminal as was suggested - not sure what you mean by "i don't give nothing to go with."
I ended up installing the hourly build 1.8.13 and it now working -
