im trying to wire up my arduino with an lcd and a protoboard and i have used the tutorial in arduino page, and also the code, but when I plug it just the light turns on, nothing happens when I move the potentiometer, and when I upload the program nothing happens just the backlight stays on.

Hi, yes a copy of sketch and pic of your project would be a great help.
Also not sure what sort of protoboard you have, but check that it isn't the one where they break the two lines that run the outside length of the board. These are the ones you can use as power supply lines, the long boards break these lines into to two lengths so you do not have continuity from one end to the other.
