The distance between digital pin 7 and 8 is 0.150", all others are 0.100". Is this an error or was it done intentionally?

It's a legacy thing, the first arduino PCB instructions sent out contained this unintended spacing and wasn't caught in time, now all shields use this spacing thus making the Arduino spacing a "Brand Feature" that can never be changed/corrected and still be called an Arduino shield compatible design..
