Arduino Uno R3 Light Curtain

Hi, I'm a student tasked with a project to invent an innovative product that solves a world issue.

As a part of the project my team and I want to design a sort of "light curtain" sensor that would fit within a 10"x10" square. None of us are very proficient in Arduino but have realized it is the best course of action. We have been researching different light sensors but have no indication of which is the right one. Any chance this one will do the trick?

Can you show us your drawing of your light curtain in a 10 inch square. I don't think we can imagine that by ourselves/

We haven't developed a drawing yet that's the issue we are running into. Is it even possible to do a light curtain or will a singular light sensor suffice? The basis of the design is to track how many pieces of trash enter a trash can. The lid of our can is designed as a 10"x10" square and after taking multiple surveys it was determined that a light sensor would be most efficient.

Just in case anyone else had no clue what a light curtain was either:

Usually a single light source and single sensor, but multiple mirrors!
