Arduino Uno sync error

avrdude: stk500_getsync(): not in sync: resp=0x00

I too have this error message. My OS is Windows 7 Pro. I have a Arduino Uno r3. Uploading worked from January to April. With May it has failed. I am not sure what has changed. I have not been installing software to the best of my recollection.

I have always used Zone Alarm Free Firewall. I tried turning it off yesterday but the error message persists.

Under Ports in Device Manager, I have Arduino Uno (COM4). I have COM4 in Tools/Serial Port.
I have set Uno in Tools/Board.

On my board, I have a green ON light and a flashing orange LED.

I am using the driver that comes with the Arduino IDE 1.0.5-r2.

Since the USB cable worked earlier in the year, I cannot see that it is anything but OK.

I believe that I have patiently worked through the Arduino suggestions.
Can anyone please help? I would be hugely grateful. I had completed the Arduino Starter Kit and was working on Arduino tutorial examples.

Tested with another USB cable. Same problem.

This worked but I don't know why.
I bought a second Arduino Uno and it worked with the Blink example completely error free.
The good news is that the original Uno was cured.
Let us hope that it lasts!
