Arduino Uno / TinyUSBisp bootloader problems again

system: W10 with IDE 2.3.10

Board: Arduino UNO original

Bootloader tool: DFROBOT USBtinyISP

I can't get this to work. My uno is working ok withthe supplied micro.
I have plugged in a new chip onthe UNO and connected the USBtinyISP to the ICSP header with the supplied lead.

I have selected UNO as the board, USBtiny as the programmer:

When I then 'run bootloader', I get the following error:

Warning: cannot open USB device: Permission denied
Error: cannot find USBtiny device (0x1781/0xc9f)
Error: unable to open port usb for programmer usbtiny
Failed chip erase: uploading error: exit status 1

The driver for the usbtiny is shown as attached:

Hi @flashr. I suspect this problem can be fixed by changing the driver used by the programmer from the current libusb-win32 to "libusbK".

You can install the driver easily by using a tool named "Zadig". I'll provide instructions you can follow to do that:

  1. Connect the USBtinyISP programmer to your computer with a USB cable.
  2. Download the Zadig driver installation tool from this website:
    http://zadig.akeo.ie/
  3. Run the downloaded file to start Zadig.
    The "Zadig" window will open.
  4. Select "USBtiny" from the drop-down menu in the "Zadig" window.
    :red_exclamation_mark: If it doesn't show up on the menu, then select Options > List all devices from the Zadig menus and check again.
  5. Click the ▴ button to the right of the "Driver" selection field until you see "libusbK".
  6. Click the "Replace Driver" button.
    An "Installing Driver..." dialog will now appear.
  7. Wait for the driver installation process to finish.
  8. Click the "Close" button in the "Driver Installation" dialog.
  9. Close the "Zadig" window.

Now try performing the "Burn Bootloader" operation again, just as you did before when you encountered that "Permission denied" error. Hopefully it will be successful this time.
Now try using the AVRISP mkII again with Arduino IDE, just as you did before. Hopefully this time the "avrdude: usbdev_open(): did not find any USB device "usb"" error will not occur and everything will work as expected.

thanks but I spent a considerable amount of time last night looking for the correct section in the pull down menu before creating a post and none of the options fitted my question.

That is no excuse for selecting the category that is marked "DO NOT USE! Please select the appropriate category for your topic.":

In the future, you must select the category with a description that best fits the subject of your topic. It is never acceptable to select the Development Tools > Uncategorized category.

Ok thanks, that worked just fine.

Ok I shan't trouble the forum again with such problems if it elicits such anger. If it causes such trouble, maybe remove the option so It can't be selected BY ACCIDENT.
