Arduino Uno with Stepper motor

I'm doing a project where I must create a mechanical device that can travel a straight path and stop before a wall. I have an Arduino uno, a stepper motor, 2 motors, a distance sensor, and wires. I have very little experience with micro controllers and motors. I'm having trouble deciding where to start, is it possible if a purchase a toy car, I can hook up the motors to this? Any suggestions are appreciated.

buy a car that has two motors, one for each of the rear wheels.
you can control them independently.
there are lots of robot stores on the web that will offer the parts, and in sizes of your choice.
