Yes, the SOMETHING is the ESP32 I/O pins are NOT 5V tolerant! Buy another board and pull your Anode up to the 3.3V on-board regulator's output.

My usual connection scheme: GPIO - LED - 330 Ohm resistor - GND. Works like a charm for my ESP8266, and will work just fine for the ESP32 as well. About 5 mA current. OK, then turn that around. +3.3V - LED - (330 Ohm - GPIO pin) * 3. Resistor may have to have different values for the different colours to have them all shine about as bright. LED is on when pin is set LOW, off when it's set HIGH (or INPUT).
