Hello!
I installed Arduino yesterday, wanting to program an Atmega16A. However, for some weird reason when I try to use it with my USBASP programmer, it can't detect the chip. HOWEVER, if I use standalone avrdude.exe or the GUI version (avrdudess.exe) it works flawlessly.
The error I get through Arduino is as follows:
avrdude: warning: cannot set sck period. please check for usbasp firmware update.
avrdude: error: program enable: target doesn't answer. 0
avrdude: initialization failed, rc=-1
Double check connections and try again, or use -F to override
this check.
Anyone knows why it fails through the Arduino's avrdude, but works in standalone one?
From the dropdown menu in the "Zadig" window, select "USBasp". If it doesn't show up on the menu, then select Options > List all devices from the Zadig menus and check again.
Click the up or down arrows next to the Driver selection box on the right side until you see "libusbK".
Click the Replace Driver button.
After the driver replacement process finishes, you can close the "Zadig" window.
Now try using the USBasp programmer once more. Hopefully the error will no longer occur.
You are welcome. I'm glad it is working now. It caused me a great deal of confusion when my beloved USBasps stopped working, but I'm glad to have discovered libusbK out of it.
I have had success with solving problems with some other devices such as my AVRISP mkII programmer as well using this technique.
