Burn Bootloader fails: "Device signature = 0x000000"

Nope, Idk who that is.

Was just looking for a solution and stumbled across this forum.

made me suspicious it could be.

Alright, that capacitor, what type and how many Farad?

Edit: Can you take a closeup of the 328(P), when inserted in the breadboard with the wires attached?

It's a 50v 1uf capacitor, not sure of the type. Here's a picture

That's a good cap. Type is electrolyte.

I added an Edit to my previous post. I'll try to see if I can make anything out of such a photo. Photos are tricky to find out.

It's difficult to see the wiring because the wires are in the way....

Is pin 8 and 22 to GND? Pin 7 and 20 to Vcc = 5 V? If you have a multimeter it's easy to check. Also if you got an extra capacitor, you could connect that between Vcc and GND on the 328P (pin 7 and 8). Mind the polarity of the cap if it's an electrolyte.

Checked, Pins 8 and 22 go to ground and pins 7 and 20 to 5v

I just added the other capacitor (found a few that were 100 nf, gonna use those since they aren't the electrolyte type)

After that check the programming wires, and then try again. Pick Minicore and 328. Choose the variant, in your case the 328P. Pick an internal clock if you intend to use it like this, w/o an external clock. There are more options, ask if you're uncertain.

If nothing of this works, the MCU is probably faulty. Either programmed with wrong fuses, or really faulty, broken.

Tried all that and it still didn't work

Adding this picture so you see what the settings are

That looks good to me, Clock is superimportant to get right, variant also important, the rest is in the long run but in this stage not.

Do you have more MCU's? Where did you buy this one?

I got this one off an Arduino that wasn't working. The thing is, I checked it on a known good Arduino and it worked.

As for where I got this one, I was teaching over the summer and the Arduinos were part of the kit. Since I wasn't the arduino teacher, I didn't look into it at the time. Initially I only got 1 good arduino but after the program, there were some extra kits that they just gave away and I ended up with 2 good Arduino Uno R3s and 2 bad ones. The company never told me where they sourced the boards from but based on everything on them, I think they got them straight from the arduino site.

I can tell you the "problem" straight away.

Since it was in an Arduino, it's programmed for an external 16 Mhz clock. Now you try to communicate with a paralyzed MCU. Without a 16 MHz clock attached you can't do anything with it.

Ah, alright

That's unfortunate but I guess I'll pick this up when I get the clock or buy the chip outright. Thanks for your help! I appreciate it

I guess I'll ask one more thing, is it possible to undo the 'paralysis' that is plaguing this chip?

I'll do the research into it myself if it's possible.

ig no need to research - phaq » Blog Archive » Arduino Duemilanove as ISP: ST500K protocol errors due to Serial Reset
read this . my issue was same but this fixed it

Yes, the fuses can be reprogrammed. When you in your case match the chip with an external 16 MHz, it's go time.

Litterly only now? I have already forgoten that..

You're thread got revived...
