Hi, I'm looking to start a project where I need to interact with a vehicle Canbus system. I'm looking for recommendations on good Canbus shields that are in a small form factor and suitable for vehicle Canbus.
My requirements so far are:
1mbps speed
powered by 12v
no need for a serial port on the board to keep form factor small
In an ideal world an arduino board with the canbus hardware built in would be ideal but I'm open to suggestions and recommendations!
Cheers,
Andy
What kind of "vehicle" do You intend to connect to? I hope it's not a car driving on public roads.
Search canbus at sparkfun.com, they have 2 or 3 different shields available using MCP2551 and MCP2515 chip pair.
One is the controller that interacts with the Arduino, the other is the transceiver that connects to the bus.

That's exactly what it's for and I can't see how that's an issue given that I deal with vehicle Canbus daily in ECUs, Dashboards and Power Distribution Modules...
@crossRoads, awesome, I'll check that out, thanks for the reply

If You are a professional designer in Automotive hardware/software, it's okey for me. I was that designer and God help me if a "typical, complete newbie" would interfere with "my CAN-bus". There's no limit of ambition from some newbie questioners and I'm sorry if I insulted You.
I wont lie, initially a little offended but I can see your cause for concern! Sorry for being so narky also!
I don't think people realise the implications and power of canbus and/or getting it wrong!...you can literally trigger an ABS module to throw brakes on in full force these days with canbus so it's really not something to be messed around with if you don't understand it, at least not for transmitting.
This project is literally to compliment the power distribution module, it only has 8 analog inputs and I want to decorate canbus with some high numbered, unimportant messages for silly things like electric window switches etc
This is in a classic mini which we convert to run a modern engine in the back, it has next to no electrics so the only other canbus modules are the ECU, PDM and Digital Dash of which I program all of the canbus profiles...as long as we're not treading on the toes on the ECU we're pretty safe
@foreverbusy_ Thanks! No offence taken or given. The peacepipe is lit here.
Remains reply #2 to check up.
