I tried to refresh my Arduino IDE, in the desperate attempt to solve the well known port bug (the port is gray). I could not get through the donation page - as I read, it is also a well known issue.
Is there any workaround to solve these problems?
I have certain problems with the can board I bought, but it means little considering that it seems impossible to upload anything to the device as arduino IDE is not working.
The IDE is downloaded by many many thousands of users.
Common issues with downloading the actual IDE are usually at the users end in either misunderstanding what they are doing, or being on a computer that may not be thier very own and subject to extra security precautions.
Most of us don't care if it is a clone as occasionally you need drivers that may not be included in the IDE.
They are covered in the sticky posts at the top of every section along with other important information you may need to supply !
THe board I am using has been made by hobbythronics in the UK, it is a Leonardo can bus board. Link to the page is here: Leonardo CAN BUS board
I cannot read what is written in it so I don`t know the chipset but contact hobbythronics - I hope they let me know.
Yes, I was one of the thousands who downloaded Arduino IDE about three years ago, and used arduino happily for my first project. Ever since, it is a constant struggle as the port is gray - no matter what computer, what operation system, browser, what board or cable I have been using. Mind you last time I tried to use arduino was about 1-2 years ago, so my system may be outdated.
For my current project I tried to use IDE again - and got a notification that there is a newer version - I thought maybe that would solve the port being gray issue - but only found that the download is impossible, I never get through the donation page. I searched on the net and found the issue - suggestion was to use Chrome. Ok, I use Chrome.
I am sorry if I sound frustrated, actually I am. Working with arduino in my view is not about getting the sketch ready, but a constant struggle to upload it to the board somehow.
My operation system is Win7 professional. I use Chrome.
The board does not show up as new device when I connect it to the port - but the led on the board starts flashing.
The error I get from arduino ide when I want upload anything to the board: "Couldn't find a Board on the selected port. Check that you have the correct port selected. If it is correct, try pressing the board's reset button after initiating the upload."
The post tab is gray in tools hence cannot be modified.
There are some reasons why a board might not show up
Board broken

Charge-only cable (without the data lines); I know that you said that you tried different cables but they all might be charge only-cables.
I know it is Christmas and early - but had to get up to buy more bread anyway, so I might as well uninstalled Arduino IDE from my laptop (win7) and tried to install once more. I was using Chrome.
When clicking on the donation page, only an image is downloading - which is like a print screen from the donation page. There is a continue button on it, but does nothing.
You have to DONATE some money to download the IDE.
People out there who set it this way! There is a huge thing between declaring that the IDE is no longer free, or making it available to download only after a donation. The first one is being fair, the latter is being sleazy.

I've never donated money; I've just tried it again and can still download without donating.
Now, that it is a paid app, i can turn to the developers as a customer who got a faulty product.
Your problem is (more than likely not the IDE) but Windows not recognising the board AT ALL. Windows should see something when you connect it; either an unknown device or a malfunctioning device or ...

My Problem is that IDE does not have the port active. The board recognition is another issue.
and what I say - that download is only available if you donate money - is based on my own experience. I can prove it again, using a camera if needed. I understand that it may be unintentional, but at the moment Arduino IDE download function works - at least in some cases - like a scamming program. This is not legal this way - i contacted the technical helpline.
Have you tried a different USB cable? I often find that new users use the first USB cable thay find, and this can be a charge only cable - that is without data lines. You could also try a different USB port. If you are in the UK, you could send the unit for testing to me, I will test it (Streaming the results if you want), and return it to you.
Another thing to do is open the Device Manager, and THEN plug the board in, see if anything gets added/changed.
With the unit plugged in, double tap the reset button (If the unit has one), again with the Device Manager open.
PS - If you decide to donate to download an app, and that app is available to download for free, then it is NOT a paid app.
thank you.
I did try it with several USB cables - besides the issue with the port being grey is not due to the device - it is grey non-stop.
About the page: if a page is possible to download for free and also to donate on it, it is a free page.
If a page lets you download it for a fee, it is a paid page.
If a page seems to be free, but the only function works on it is to let you download it after you donate, than it is a tax fraudulent page - and that is exactly how aurduino cc works, according to my experience.

The Windows issue is the cause of the IDE issue. Fix the OS problem and the IDE problem goes away. ( probably )

You are mistaken. On the donations page, click the enormous button labelled "JUST DOWNLOAD" and no money need exchange hands.

This is nonsense.
In your position I'd uninstall any currently installed Arduino drivers, download the IDE and reinstall the correct drivers, on my installation they're at the root of the installation folder in a folder called drivers.
Give it a try using one of the links I provided if necessary and report back if you continue to have problems.
I just tried to download the IDE for free and it worked. I have to assume it's an issue with your browser. The 47+ Million downloads that the IDE has had and you are the third person I have seen with an issue prove the issue is NOT with the arduino page.
